Kitay-gorod lanes

Kitay-gorod is a knot of lanes where churches and offices share the same bend on the map. An escort flat here is found by the lane name and the door, not by the nearest dome on the skyline, because two courtyards open off the same corner and only one of them matches the intercom you were given.

Cars belong on the last street wide enough to stop; the last fifty metres are usually on foot with the number already on the screen. After ten the small lanes are quiet while Nikolskaya and the river side stay busy, so the guest who waits on the bright street is often standing in the wrong place.

Saint Basil's Cathedral near Kitay-gorod
Landmarks help on a map; the door is on a lane the landmark does not name.

From here, Pokrovka is a short ride for dinner, and Tverskaya side streets are the next belt outward. Write the lane, the arch, and the flat number in one message; do not send a pin dropped on Red Square and expect the car to guess the courtyard.

GUM and the old trading rows at night
The trading rows are a walk away; the visit still needs a car-friendly stop street.

Map: Kitay-gorod on Google Maps. Also in Moscow: Barrikadnaya, Arbat side streets, and nightclubs and dress codes.
